Turning Sacred Spaces Into Affordable Places
James Rahman grew up in the Bronx, raised by his hardworking father, Otter, who taught him one simple truth: give generously while you can. After a successful career in real estate and energy, James devoted his retirement to honoring that belief.
He saw opportunity where others saw abandonment. His first project: transforming an empty church into 32 beautiful, affordable apartments. It was more than housing—it was purpose. A calling.
That vision became The Otter Idea: a not-for-profit dedicated to converting unused houses of worship into high-quality, affordable housing for individuals and families with below-average income.
We carry on James' mission by partnering with developers and communities to bring life back to sacred spaces—sustainably, ethically, and accessibly.
We don’t just build. We share.
Our team offers free guidance through zoning, tax incentives, and grant processes, helping others do the same across the country.
Let’s rebuild with purpose
